About the Spanish Automotive Industry:
Spain is the 2nd largest automobile manufacturer in Europe and the 9th largest in the world.
The automotive sector is a strategic sector for the Spanish economy. The country has 17 factories and 9 multinational brands. Among them; CUPRA, Aspid, Abadal, Hurtan, Sunred, Tramontana, Volkswagen, Irizar, Nissan, Pegaso, etc.
Spanish factories produced 2.1 million vehicles in 2021, 16 of which were electric models. The turnover of the Spanish automotive sector represents 10% of Spain's GDP and 18% of its total exports (including vehicles and car parts). The foreign trade surplus of vehicles reached 18.9 billion euros in 2021, while the sector accounts for 9% of total employment.
The automotive industry is one of the largest investors in R&D and Development in the economy, with an average of 4 billion euros invested annually in the expansion and modernization of facilities. In addition, the Spanish automotive industry is one of the most attractive sectors for foreign investors.
In 2021, 86% of vehicles and 60% of auto parts produced in Spain were exported worldwide. A total of 1,820,727 vehicles of Spanish origin were exported. While the main export target is the EU, exports to markets outside the EU are also increasing rapidly, with Africa, especially Algeria, Morocco and South Africa, the USA, Mexico and Chile, Japan and the UAE becoming important markets for vehicles produced in Spain.
As of 2018, Turkey ranks 7th in Spain's automotive imports. Our country also ranks 2nd in Spain's bus imports and 3rd in imports of motor vehicles for the transport of goods.
